Reporter, CyberScoop

WASHINGTON, DC

CyberScoop seeks an energetic reporter to break news regarding election security, disinformation and more across the evolving cybersecurity landscape. This is an opportunity for an ambitious journalist to generate scoops on a high-profile beat going into 2024.

This reporter will be expected to cover data security issues around the 2024 election and beyond; how foreign actors are attempting to influence the election; how technology companies, civil society and state election authorities are responding; how political campaigns are using emerging technologies, with a particular focus on AI; and how corporate and government actors use and abuse data.

Cybersecurity is about more than software vulnerabilities and misconfigurations. This reporter will focus on how large-scale technical systems and data can be abused to create unintended outcomes — and what to do about it.

This is a role for a journalist well versed in online life and culture with an ability to write about technical topics for non-technical audiences, an ability to marry stories on technology with a consideration of their policy impacts and a track record of developing sources inside and out of government.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Produce articles on a range of deadlines, from short daily items to mid-range enterprise features to long-term investigations;
  • Deliver exclusive news on issues core to the beat;
  • Pitch original, insightful ideas and submit work on deadline;
  • Approach complex, technology-driven stories in creative ways, considering how human beings are affected by technical systems;
  • Develop a diverse roster of sources in government, industry and civil society;
  • Work collaboratively with other reporters;
  • Occasionally appear on CyberScoop podcasts and interview government and technology industry officials at CyberScoop events.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Four or more years of professional experience as a journalist, writer or researcher, with a focus on technology issues (experience covering cybersecurity is preferred but not required);
  • A track record of writing lucidly about technical issues;
  • A track record of developing sources;
  • A demonstrated ability to use research tools to uncover new, interesting information;
  • An ability to file clean, accurate copy on deadline;
  • An ability to travel to Washington, D.C. and industry events as needed;
  • Strong communications and organization skills;
  • Strong knowledge of SEO, AP Style and social media; and
  • Experience with multimedia tools, content management systems and other tools to create a polished final product.
